Job Details

A DH4 dog handler is responsible for training and handling dogs in a variety of settings, such as law enforcement, and security. Their job involves working closely with dogs to ensure they are properly trained to perform tasks such as apprehending suspects when necessary. DH4 dog handlers must possess strong communication skills, patience, and a deep understanding of canine behavior and training techniques. They also play a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of the dogs under their care.

Perform routine maintenance on dogs.

Proactively search for suspects and locate victims.

Train and handle dogs for security, surveillance, detection, and rescue purposes.

Monitor and referee dog behaviour.

Perform basic first aid on dogs as required.

Assessing dog incidents as needed.

Perform temperament evaluations.

Conduct dog handling activities

PSIRA Registered (Minimum Grade C).

K9 / Dog handler training certificate DH4.

2 years’ experience as dog handler

Ability to think rationally and respond in escalating situations in a calm manner.

The ability to work with minimum supervision.

Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

Must be fluent in English (Verbal and Writing)

Be able to properly identify dog breeds.

Valid code 8 drivers’ licence

Mining Experience will be an added advantage.

Working knowledge of basic dog first aid

Any further education in policing / investigations.
