Our Client is a well established Solar Company who is seeking to employ a Health and Safety Officer for a 12 Month civil construction project in the Northen Cape. (Susecfull candidate will be employed under the Johannesburg head office but expected to be on site on contract commencemnt in July 2024). 

Job Summary:

The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of all employees, subcontractors, and visitors at the construction site. This role involves implementing and monitoring safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and Implement Safety Policies:

    • Create and enforce safety policies and procedures in accordance with legal requirements and best practices.
    • Update and maintain safety manuals and documentation.
  2. Risk Assessment and Management:

    • Conduct regular risk assessments and identify potential hazards.
    • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.
    • Monitor high-risk activities and ensure proper safety measures are in place.
  3. Training and Education:

    • Organize and conduct safety training sessions for employees and subcontractors.
    • Ensure all personnel are aware of safety protocols and emergency procedures.
    • Maintain training records and ensure all certifications are up to date.
  4. Site Inspections and Audits:

    • Perform regular site inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
    • Identify unsafe conditions and practices and recommend corrective actions.
    • Conduct internal audits and prepare reports on safety performance.
  5. Incident Management:

    • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses to identify root causes.
    • Prepare and submit detailed incident reports.
    • Recommend corrective actions and follow up to ensure implementation.
  6. Compliance and Documentation:

    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.
    • Maintain accurate records of safety-related activities, incidents, and training.
    • Liaise with regulatory bodies and participate in external audits as required.
  7. Emergency Preparedness:

    • Develop and maintain emergency response plans.
    • Coordinate and conduct emergency drills.
    • Ensure that emergency equipment is available and in working order.
  8. Communication and Reporting:

    • Report safety performance and issues to the Project Manager/Site Manager.
    • Communicate safety concerns and best practices to all site personnel.
    • Prepare and present safety reports and statistics for management review.


  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a health and safety role within the construction industry.
    • Proven track record of implementing safety policies and procedures on construction sites.
  • Certifications:

    • NEBOSH, IOSH, or other relevant safety certifications.
    • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to conduct thorough investigations and write detailed reports.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily on-site at construction locations.
  • May require occasional travel to other project sites.
  • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions and environments typical of construction sites.
