Nearly Half of South African Workers Feel Underpaid, Says Job Crystal Research

New insights from Job Crystal reveal that 48% of South African professionals believe their salaries do not accurately reflect the work they do. Despite average salaries reaching record highs in some sectors, many employees still report feeling financially stretched and are living paycheque to paycheque.

The findings highlight significant salary differences across regions and industries. Johannesburg salaries continue to outpace Cape Town in many sectors, while professionals in high-demand fields such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) often command higher salaries due to skills shortages and increased competition for talent.

According to Job Crystal CEO Sasha Knott, salary benchmarking is more than an HR exercise โ€“ it is a strategic business tool that helps organisations make informed remuneration decisions, improve employee retention, and reduce the costly impact of staff turnover. Accurate salary data also plays an important role in promoting pay transparency and addressing long-standing pay gaps within the workplace.

As businesses compete for skilled talent in an evolving labour market, understanding market-related salaries is becoming increasingly important for attracting, retaining, and fairly rewarding employees.
