Compliance Specialist

A sharp-eyed Compliance Specialist is needed to keep governance tight, reporting accurate, and regulatory risk firmly under control. This role sits at the heart of a busy financial services environment, where legislation moves fast and compliance needs to stay one step ahead.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, implement, and maintain a robust compliance programme aligned to statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Support the compliance risk management and monitoring plan, with clear focus on high-risk areas and timely follow-through
  • Partner with the regulator and internal stakeholders to keep reporting accurate, complete, and on time
  • Monitor compliance activity across multiple disciplines, identifying gaps, escalating major issues, and driving corrective action to closure
  • Deliver detailed compliance reporting, spotting trends, interpreting patterns, and turning data into practical recommendations
  • Strengthen the compliance management system by reviewing policies, processes, and business procedures
  • Drive compliance automation and encourage smarter use of compliance systems to improve reporting and oversight
  • Provide practical advice on policy interpretation, regulatory requirements, and contentious issues
  • Support product launches, new business partnerships, internal forums, and other projects where compliance input matters
  • Ensure contracts, notifications, and procurement processes meet compliance requirements
  • Promote awareness of policies and procedures through training, guidance, and ongoing communication

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

This role calls for confident relationship-building across the business, from executive leaders to operational teams and external regulatory contacts. Clear communication, sound judgement, and the ability to keep people informed on deadlines and legislative changes are key.

LEADERSHIP AND IMPROVEMENT

  • Provide guidance to the compliance team and help translate strategy into day-to-day action
  • Motivate colleagues to stay focused on local goals and compliance priorities
  • Identify process weaknesses and contribute to practical improvements
  • Support small change initiatives that improve control, consistency, and efficiency

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus a BProc, LLB, or similar degree
  • FSCA registration as a Compliance Officer
  • 5+ years’ experience in insurance and financial services compliance
  • Strong knowledge of monitoring, regulatory affairs, and compliance reporting
  • Sound understanding of the Insurance Act, FAIS Act, Companies Act, POPI Act, TCF, National Credit Act, PAIA, ECT Act, Medical Schemes Act, and Pension Fund Act
  • Proficient in MS Office and confident with compliance systems and digital tools
  • 1–3 years’ supervisory experience

IDEAL ADDITIONS

  • Compliance Institute registration
  • Diploma in Compliance Management
  • Admitted Advocate or Attorney status
