Embedded C Developer

This role focuses on developing embedded C applications that support connected, intelligent transport solutions, with a strong emphasis on reliability, safety and efficient system performance.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The position is based in Cape Town and centres on embedded C development for microcontroller-based systems used within intelligent transport and traffic infrastructure. Work involves both creating new features and improving existing code to support large-scale, connected systems that link devices such as traffic controllers, beacons and other field hardware to cloud-based platforms.

Key responsibilities include

  • Developing embedded applications in C for microcontroller-based devices
  • Creating and maintaining design documentation and feature specifications
  • Analysing requirements and translating them into robust technical solutions
  • Debugging and resolving code-related issues on embedded targets
  • Updating, refactoring and optimising existing codebases for performance and maintainability
  • Interpreting technical documentation and datasheets to ensure correct hardware and peripheral integration
  • Collaborating with colleagues across different locations (including South Africa, the US and India) to align on design, implementation and testing
  • Managing multiple development tasks concurrently, while maintaining quality and meeting agreed timelines
  • The role has clear potential for growth into taking technical ownership of projects, contributing to architecture decisions and leading selected development initiatives.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • A relevant Software or Engineering qualification
  • Strong programming experience in C
  • Practical experience with microcontroller programming (e.g. bare-metal or RTOS-based)
  • Solid understanding of core software engineering principles and good engineering judgement
  • Ability to debug embedded systems and work systematically through complex technical issues
  • Strong sense of ownership, accountability and follow-through on assigned work
  • Ability to manage your own workload and priorities with minimal supervision
  • Effective problem-solving skills and a structured approach to troubleshooting
  • Clear, professional communication skills for working within distributed teams
  • Part of this position is testing your code on devices

NICE TO HAVE

  • Linux programming experience, particularly in support of embedded or systems-level development
  • Experience using Git or GitHub for version control and code collaboration
  • Confidence in reading and interpreting electronic component datasheets
  • Exposure to electronic hardware, such as understanding schematics, interfaces and basic hardware bring-up

WHY JOIN US

  • Opportunity to work on real-world intelligent transport and smart city solutions that combine embedded devices with cloud-connected platforms
  • Exposure to a modern, cross-border engineering environment collaborating with colleagues in multiple countries
  • Clear scope for professional growth, including taking the lead on projects and expanding responsibility over time
  • Chance to work across the full embedded development lifecycle, from design and documentation through implementation, debugging and optimisation
  • To apply, submit your CV highlighting your embedded C, microcontroller and any Linux experience, along with your relevant qualification details.
