Purpose of the Role

The purpose of this role is to ensure the business’s ongoing compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations by overseeing and conducting investigations, reporting obligations, and implementing effective risk mitigation strategies. The AML Compliance Officer plays a key role in fostering a culture of compliance, supporting regulatory readiness, and safeguarding the business against financial crime by working closely with internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12

  • A suitable legal or commerce qualification (advantageous)

  • Certificate in Anti-Money Laundering (advantageous)

  • Working knowledge of the following legislation (advantageous):

    • Financial Intelligence Centre Amendment Act (FICAA)

    • Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorist and Related Activities Act

    • Prevention of Organised Crime Act and related regulations

  • 3–5 years of financial industry experience, specifically within Insurers, Unit Trust Service Providers, or Linked Investment Service Providers

  • Knowledge of the business’s systems and platforms (advantageous)


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations into all AML-related alerts and activities to determine regulatory reporting requirements to the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC).

  • Assist the AML Officers in fostering a strong culture of AML compliance across the business.

  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of AML compliance risk management and monitoring plans.

  • Contribute to the identification and implementation of effective mitigating actions for key AML risks.

  • Act as the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) for South African registered Accountable Institutions under the business.

  • Investigate the following:

    • Reportable Cash Transactions (CTR/CTRA) identified via monitoring systems or reported by the business;

    • Suspicious and Unusual Transactions or Activities (STR/STRA) generated via internal alerts or business reports;

    • Screening results related to Sanctions, Domestic Prominent Influential Persons (DPIPs), Foreign Prominent Public Officials (FPPOs), and Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs).

  • Ensure timely submission of CTRs, STRs, and Terrorist Property Reports to the FIC.

  • Manage S27, S32, and S34 enquiries from the FIC or other authorized agencies with urgency and accuracy.

  • Collate AML-related data across the business to support compliance program development and enhancement.

  • Engage with internal stakeholders to address risks from control failures and ensure effective remediation.

  • Prepare clear, accurate reports for internal stakeholders on AML risks, regulatory submissions, and compliance status.

  • Implement Risk Management and Compliance Program (RMCP) requirements through updated processes, rules, SOPs, and MLRO training.
