How We Work

We operate in small, autonomous teams who take complete ownership of client solutions. You’ll become a trusted partner who understands the client’s business deeply and helps shape their technology roadmap. We’re fully remote across South Africa with occasional meetings in Cape Town for strategy and collaboration. We work with flexible hours, focus on outcomes, and leverage AI tools to enhance our development efficiency.

The Opportunity

We are seeking experienced developers and technical professionals as well as engineers or business analysts transitioning into software development. You’ll build scalable applications across multiple business domains, bridging business needs with software solutions through low-code practices. You’ll be part of a specialised team crafting primarily Mendix financial services solutions.

Core Technologies Used at AWG

  • Mendix Low-Code Platform
  • Python, TypeScript, HTML/CSS, RUST, Haskell (beneficial, but not required)
  • AI/ML Frameworks, Cloud Platforms, Linux skills (bonus)

Why Mendix

We use Mendix because it lets us deliver sophisticated business solutions at speed. Its visual interface and enterprise-grade security mean we can build complex applications faster – allowing our team to focus on solving business challenges rather than wrestling with code. This helps clients achieve ambitious goals while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Who Thrives Here

Backgrounds We Welcome:

  • Engineering Minds – Electronic, Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial engineers transitioning to software
  • CS Innovators – Developers wanting exposure to diverse domains
  • Business Analysts – FinTech experience with technical/business bridging skills
  • STEM Professionals – Strong analytical foundations with coding exposure
  • Low-Code Specialists – Existing experience with low-code platforms

You’ll Excel If You:

  • Get excited about modeling complex systems and first-principles thinking
  • Want to see your work directly impact real businesses
  • Adapt quickly to new technologies and thrive in dynamic environments
  • Take pride in owning solutions from conception to retirement
  • Value being a trusted advisor, not just a developer

Key Responsibilities

1. Own the entire solution lifecycle from understanding business needs through deployment, support, and continuous enhancement (initially with mentorship, progressing to full autonomy)

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy applications on the Mendix platform
  • Transform prototypes into scalable production software
  • Implement integrations with enterprise systems and APIs
  • Maintain and enhance production systems while developing new capabilities

2. Design solutions that fit the client environment by understanding their business, constraints, and goals

  • Collaborate with business analysts, domain experts, and team members to translate requirements into functional features

3. Manage production systems including support channels, user training, and documentation

  • Document processes, application changes, and technical solutions

4. Create and communicate technology roadmaps for your solutions
5. Collaborate with your team to share knowledge and ensure solution continuity
6. Evolve into a strategic advisor who shapes planning and strategy, not just implements requirements

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or another STEM field with strong analytical foundations OR provable experience in delivering solutions with more than 2+ years of commercial experience.
  • Some coding background (Python, TypeScript, or similar) and willingness to learn Mendix rapidly.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Curiosity about how software solves complex business problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work both collaboratively in a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated ownership and accountability for deliverables.
  • For non-CS majors: demonstrable enthusiasm for software development.
  • Experience in client-facing or business analysis roles is valuable but not required.

Desirable:

  • Exposure to relational databases and SQL.
  • Understanding of REST APIs and integration concepts.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
  • Mendix Rapid Developer Certification (advantageous, but not required).
