Driver Trainer

Ready to shape the next generation of safe, skilled drivers in the waste management industry? This role puts you at the heart of driver development, where your expertise directly impacts safety, compliance, and operational excellence. You’ll work with new and experienced drivers, identifying development needs, delivering targeted training, and building a culture of continuous improvement.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate new driver candidates and assess their readiness for the role
  • Deliver comprehensive training on vehicle inspections, electronic systems, tracking systems, and safety procedures
  • Conduct daily field supervision and observations to monitor driver performance and identify training gaps
  • Investigate accidents and damage incidents, then design and deliver targeted training to prevent recurrence
  • Train drivers on specialised vehicles, manifest procedures, weighbridge operations, and accident reporting protocols
  • Maintain detailed training records and progress documentation for all drivers
  • Analyse transportation data to proactively identify drivers needing additional support or development
  • Lead safety and compliance initiatives, ensuring all drivers understand legislation, company procedures, and incident reporting requirements
  • Conduct site visits and develop standard operating procedures for training delivery
  • Counsel drivers on performance and recommend appropriate actions when needed
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a driving instructor or in a similar training/supervisory role
  • Valid code 14 driver’s licence (or equivalent for your jurisdiction)
  • Valid driving instructor’s licence or formal certification
  • Matric or grade 12 qualification
  • Clean driving record with excellent safety credentials
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and Microsoft Teams
  • Strong coaching and motivation skills—you genuinely enjoy developing people
  • Excellent organisational and planning abilities
  • Sharp attention to detail with meticulous administrative standards
  • Professional presentation and outstanding communication skills
  • Emotional intelligence: empathetic, a good listener, and able to build trust with team members

THE ROLE IN PRACTICE

You’ll spend time both in the office managing records and analysing data, and out in the field observing drivers and delivering hands-on coaching. Your days involve mentoring new recruits through their first routes, reviewing safety footage, conducting investigations, and working with the transport manager to drive continuous improvement across the fleet.
