As an industry pioneer in sub-Saharan Africa, we’re known far and wide for our excellent service and high-quality products. Over the years, we’re proud to have helped create and define some of the continent’s best-loved brands. This is due to the fact that we don’t just understand the science of fragrance and flavour, but the psychology behind it too – which allows us to craft uniquely appealing tastes and scents.

Purpose of position:

  • To analyze the chemical composition of flavours and fragrances for respective consumer

products using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain the GC-MS and FID (Flame Ionization Detector) including calibration,

consumables and troubleshooting.

  • Prepare detailed reports on analytical findings while documenting procedures and maintaining accurate records of all analyses.
  • Extract, purify and prepare flavour and fragrance samples for GC-MS analysis (including techniques such as solvent extraction or SPME).
  • Analyse chromatograms, identify and quantify volatile compounds and interpret spectral data using spectral libraries and retention indices.
  • Work closely with flavourists and perfumers and other technical teams to provide rational results, analytical support for product development, quality control and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure all laboratory practices adhere to safety guidelines and quality standards.

Requirements & Skills:

  • A Degree in chemistry or related field (MSc or PhD preferred).
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining GC-MS and FID equipment.
  • Understand different columns used in GC-MS.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret chromatograms and identifying compounds.
  • Chemical knowledge and understanding of flavour and fragrance chemistry including raw materials and their properties.
  • Problem solving abilities to troubleshoot instrument issues and solve analytical problems.
  • Communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical teams and present findings.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and report writing skills.

At least 8 years’ experience in flavour and fragrance analysis, particularly using GC-MS
