Job Title: Operational HSSE Manager – Phalaborwa

Reporting to: Group HSSEQ Manager

Location: Phalaborwa, South Africa

 

Job Description

Our client is looking for an operational HSSE Manager to manage the HSSE Assurance & Compliance needs & expectations on the Phalaborwa mining plants in a cohesive, efficient manner within cost, quality, safety and as per prescribed legislation.

 

Key Responsibilities

Contract Management

  • Monitor that all work allocated to the allocated operational contractors- is executed and complies with the HSSE criteria.
  • Perform effective and efficient program control to meet the required compliance & assurance safely.
  • Facilitate all HSSE meetings, discuss standard agenda items and coordinate meeting minutes.
  • Perform effective HSSE management.
  • Perform effective sub-contractor and inter-department HSSE management.

Business Units

  • Assess, monitor, and mitigate potential risks that may arise in the interest of the Group from a compliance & assurance view.
  • Integrate all business units to be ISO45001:2018 compliant.
  • Assist all managers, directors, and relevant team members with contractual obligations.
  • Ensure compliance through visits to sites and continuous auditing.
  • Manage, assist, and liaise with all HSSE personnel within all group business units through coaching and guidance to ensure compliance & assurance.

Quality Management

  • Assist all managers with the relevant requirements as prescribed with quality management.
  • Ensure adherence to ISO and internal quality systems.
  • Maintain adherence to business management systems (BMS) and ensure compliance with standard management systems, forms, and procedures.

Communication and Relationship Management

  • Establish and maintain customer and stakeholder relationships (External and Internal).
  • Communicate regularly with your stakeholders during the operation of the business units on compliance & assurance matters.
  • Support strong inter-relationships with other sections, such as the works, site, maintenance, and engineering, to ensure a unified approach.

Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Adherence

  • Continuous improvement:
    • Ensure that the SHEMS (Safety, Health & Environment management system) is up to date
    • Ensure all business units have been trained, coached, and guided to use the SHEMS system optimally
    • Ensure SHEMS are continuously improving
    • Develop and maintain initiatives to improve on HSSE Assurance & Compliance
  • SHE Compliance:
    • Ensure all legal appointees are coached, trained and continuously compliant with their appointments.
  • Environmental Compliance:
    • Adheres to Environmental aspects, related impacts and legal requirements associated with work activities in accordance with ISO 14001 and the National Environmental Act (NEMA)

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Management or related studies.
  • Management Development Programme (MDP)(Advantageous)
  • In-depth knowledge of ISO Standards implementation, Matrix, and requirements.
  • Experience in best incident investigation techniques.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role in the mining industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant mine and health safety legislation.
