Finance Assistant / Junior Accountant — Property Industry
Role Overview
Our client, a UK-based property company, is looking for a reliable, self-motivated finance support professional to join their team remotely. This role sits somewhere between an Finance Assistant to a Junior Accountant — the exact shape of the role will be defined around the right candidate’s strengths. What matters most is solid, hands-on property industry finance experience and prior exposure to working for a UK company, rather than formal qualifications.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a finance/admin background in property (lettings, estate agency, property management, real estate finance) who thrives working independently and can be trusted to manage their own workload without close supervision.
Day-to-Day Duties
Bookkeeping & transaction processing
Processing purchase invoices and supplier statements
Raising sales invoices and credit notes
Bank reconciliations (multiple accounts)
Processing expense claims
Matching, batching and coding transactions
Property-specific finance admin
Processing rent receipts and tenant payments
Reconciling landlord/tenant statements
Handling service charge and deposit administration
Liaising with letting agents/property managers on financial queries
Assisting with arrears tracking and rent reminders
Accounts payable/receivable
Chasing outstanding invoices and managing debtor lists
Preparing supplier payment runs for approval
Responding to supplier and client account queries
Reporting & month-end support
Assisting with month-end journals and accruals/prepayments
Preparing basic management reports and spreadsheets
Supporting budget vs. actual tracking
Assisting with VAT return preparation (UK VAT exposure advantageous)
General finance administration
Maintaining accurate, organised digital filing of financial records
Updating and maintaining spreadsheets/accounting software (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)
Supporting the wider team with ad hoc financial administration
Diary/inbox support on finance-related correspondence where required
Requirements
Essential
Proven experience working within the property industry (letting agency, estate agency, property management company, real estate developer, or similar)
Previous experience working for a UK-based company (understanding of UK business practices, terminology, and working culture)
Strong working knowledge of Excel/Google Sheets
Experience with at least one accounting software package (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar)
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
High level of accuracy and attention to detail
Reliable home internet connection and a suitable, quiet remote working setup
Ability to work UK hours consistently from South Africa
Desirable (not essential)
Bookkeeping qualification or working towards an accounting qualification (AAT, SAIPA, ACCA, etc.) — not a requirement, experience is prioritised
Exposure to UK VAT and basic UK accounting/tax terminology
Familiarity with property management software (e.g. Fixflo, Arthur, Reapit, Propertyware)
Personal attributes
Self-starter who can manage their own time and priorities without in-person supervision
Highly reliable and consistent — this role depends on trust and accountability in a remote setting
Proactive communicator, comfortable flagging issues early rather than waiting to be asked
Comfortable working independently for extended periods while staying responsive to the UK team
Adaptable — able to flex between administrative, bookkeeping, and light analytical tasks as the role evolves
