Sand Mine Manager
Manage the day-to-day operation of a single-site sand mine, overseeing extraction, processing, plant maintenance, dispatch, compliance and a hands-on site workforce. This permanent, site-based role suits a practical tradesperson, diesel mechanic or construction foreman seeking long-term responsibility for one operation.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The operation supports bulk transport and plant activities, with responsibility for maintaining reliable production and efficient product movement from the mine to customers. Key duties include:
Plan and oversee daily sand extraction, stockpiling, screening, washing and loading.
Manage production, product quality and dispatch targets.
Monitor stockpile levels, product grading and customer specifications.
Oversee weighbridge activities, load control and truck turnaround times.
Maintain accurate records of dispatched tonnages and stock movements.
Supervise the use of excavators, front-end loaders, dump trucks, screens and wash-plant equipment.
Implement preventative maintenance schedules and arrange repairs to reduce downtime.
Troubleshoot mechanical faults and determine whether equipment should be repaired, outsourced or replaced.
Control the use of fuel, spares and other consumables.
Supervise, schedule and support operators, drivers and general labourers.
Allocate daily tasks, monitor performance and manage discipline in line with applicable labour legislation.
Conduct toolbox talks and provide practical, on-the-job training.
Enforce safe working practices in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and site safety rules.
Ensure correct PPE use, incident reporting and investigation, and safe separation of vehicles and pedestrians.
Maintain compliance with mining-right or permit conditions, including dust control, water use and rehabilitation of mined areas.
Liaise with inspectors, authorities, customers, hauliers and suppliers as required.
Maintain production, stock, safety and maintenance records.
Submit regular operational reports to management.
Assist with budgets, cost control and purchase requisitions.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Practical experience in construction, plant and machinery, heavy-duty mechanical work or a related environment.
Sound knowledge of heavy-duty and construction machinery.
Proven experience supervising a blue-collar workforce.
Strong supervisory, organisational and people-management skills.
Practical problem-solving ability and a technically minded approach.
Valid driver’s licence, with Code 8 as the minimum requirement.
Willingness to work on site for the long term.
A consistent commitment to safe working practices and a well-controlled operating environment.
NICE TO HAVE
Experience in mining, quarrying, aggregates, sand or stone operations.
A National Diploma or N-certificates in a technical field.
First-aid, firefighting or safety-representative training.
Experience operating or maintaining wash plants, screens or crushing equipment.
Experience with stock control, weighbridges and basic production reporting.
Basic computer literacy, including Excel, email and operational reporting.
Knowledge of environmental controls and rehabilitation requirements.
Heavy-machinery operator tickets or competency certificates.
Knowledge of the Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and disciplinary procedures.
A Code 10 or Code 14 driver’s licence.
WHY JOIN US
Take ownership of a single-site sand-mining operation rather than moving between projects.
Work closely with plant, equipment, transport and dispatch activities in a practical bulk-materials environment.
Apply hands-on mechanical and supervisory experience across production, maintenance, safety and workforce management.
Build on a stable operational platform connected to bulk transport and heavy-plant activities.
Apply with your CV if you have the practical leadership, machinery knowledge and site discipline required to manage a productive and compliant sand-mining operation.
