Business Central Developer

This role focuses on designing, building and supporting Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central solutions and related Microsoft technologies to improve automation, operational efficiency and overall business performance for small and medium-sized organisations.

Based in office: Tableview (hybrid)

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Business Central Developer works as part of a Microsoft Business Applications delivery team, collaborating with consultants, project teams and clients to implement and enhance ERP solutions. The work combines hands-on development, solution design, integration, testing and ongoing support.

Key areas of responsibility include

  • Solution development
  • Develop, customise, test and deploy Business Central solutions based on agreed requirements
  • Create and maintain Business Central extensions using AL
  • Design technical solutions that are scalable, maintainable and secure
  • Implement new functionality, upgrades and technical improvements across client environments
  • Participate in code reviews and follow established development standards and best practices
  • Technical design and solution architecture
  • Translate functional requirements into clear technical specifications and development tasks
  • Collaborate closely with Functional Consultants and Project Consultants to design effective solutions
  • Recommend technical approaches aligned with Microsoft best practices and project scope
  • Contribute to effort estimation, sprint or project planning and delivery commitments
  • Take part in solution architecture reviews and technical design discussions
  • Integrations, data and automation
  • Design, develop and maintain integrations between Business Central and third-party applications
  • Work with REST APIs, web services, SQL and other integration technologies
  • Build automation solutions using Microsoft Power Platform where appropriate
  • Support data migration, transformation, validation and reconciliation activities
  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation for integrations, data processes and system architecture
  • Testing and quality assurance
  • Prepare and execute unit, integration and regression tests for developed solutions
  • Investigate defects, identify root causes and implement reliable fixes
  • Support User Acceptance Testing by resolving development-related issues
  • Use source control and development lifecycle practices consistently
  • Ensure solutions meet agreed quality, security and performance standards
  • Client support and solution maintenance
  • Investigate and resolve development-related support tickets and technical issues
  • Provide clear progress updates and accurately document resolutions
  • Support deployments, upgrades, go-live and stabilisation activities
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend sustainable improvements to stability and supportability
  • Escalate risks, blockers and complex issues through appropriate delivery channels
  • Continuous learning and improvement
  • Develop specialist knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and AL development
  • Build capability in Microsoft Power Platform, Azure services and related technologies where relevant
  • Contribute to internal development standards, reusable components and technical documentation
  • Participate in training, Microsoft certifications and knowledge-sharing activities
  • Share lessons learned and improvement ideas with the wider team

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Essential skills and experience

  • Relevant degree, diploma or qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Development or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Around 2 or more years of software development experience, depending on role level
  • Experience with one or more of the following: AL, C#, .NET, SQL, JavaScript or comparable development technologies
  • Understanding of databases, APIs, web services and software integration principles
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to document technical work clearly and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Commitment to quality, continuous learning and client-focused delivery
  • Willingness to work towards relevant Microsoft certifications

NICE TO HAVE

  • Advantageous skills and experience
  • Hands-on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central development experience
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV and C/AL experience, with exposure to AL
  • Experience with ERP platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Sage, SYSPRO, NetSuite, Acumatica or similar
  • Experience with REST APIs, Azure services, Power Platform or Power BI
  • Exposure to Azure DevOps, Git, source control or CI/CD practices
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, logistics, warehousing, distribution or manufacturing processes
  • Existing Microsoft certifications in relevant technologies
