This Commercial Underwriter role sits at the heart of a fast-paced short-term insurance environment, balancing solid technical know-how with client-centric service and a keen eye for detail.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Handle the day-to-day underwriting and servicing of commercial insurance policies with accuracy, care, and efficiency.
- Manage incoming and outgoing calls with clients, brokers, and advisors, resolving queries and keeping everyone in the loop
- Obtain quotes from insurers or prepare quotes under binder agreements for new business, renewals, re-broking, and policy amendments
- Supply clear, professional quotations to clients and advisors, explaining cover, terms, and premiums
- Issue new business policies on internal systems or via direct insurers, making sure documentation is complete and accurate
- Process broker appointments and update records so intermediaries are correctly linked and compliant
- Action policy amendments requested by clients and advisors, issuing confirmations of cover and updated policy schedules
- Follow up on unpaid premiums according to company processes to reduce lapses and maintain portfolio health
- Handle policy cancellations, discussing implications with advisors and clients and confirming final cancellation details
- Assist with general insurance-related queries, complaints, and problem-solving across commercial lines
- Mentor junior staff, support on-the-job training, and share technical knowledge to uplift the team’s capability
- Manage Workpool correspondence: create tasks, document conversations, track actions, and close tasks timeously
- Tackle ad hoc underwriting and administration tasks within your field of expertise as needed
REQUIREMENTS
- Bring solid short-term insurance experience and the right certifications to hit the ground running.
- Grade 12/Matric
- NQF4 in Short-Term Insurance
- RE5 regulatory exam
- Minimum of 5 years short-term insurance experience, ideally with strong exposure to commercial lines
- Strong analytical skills, comfortable working with policy wording, limits, and regulatory requirements
- Confident communicator who can handle complaints professionally and keep conversations constructive
- Good understanding of short-term insurance products, policies, and industry regulations
