Personal Lines Underwriter

Core Responsibilities
- Underwriting and Quotations
- Handle end-to-end underwriting and quotation work across the personal lines portfolio.
- Obtain quotations from insurers or prepare them under binder agreements
- Process quotations for amendments, additions, new business, and rebroke cases
- Provide clear, confident recommendations to clients and advisors
- Support and guide Junior Underwriters with complex or unusual cases
New Business Administration
- Keep new business flowing smoothly with accurate, timely policy setup.
- Capture and issue new policies on the relevant systems
- Request policy issuance from insurers and verify all details on receipt
- Prepare and distribute closing documentation to clients
- Confirm premiums and deduction dates with precision
- Process broker appointments in line with internal procedures
- Policy Maintenance and Amendments
- Make sure every policy stays current, relevant, and correctly documented.
- Action policy amendments from clients, advisors, or insurers
- Implement changes arising from renewal discussions
- Issue confirmations of cover for all relevant changes
- Distribute updated schedules and supporting documentation
- Premium and Cancellation Management
- Keep the premium and cancellation side of the book running like clockwork.
- Manage unpaid premiums in line with company procedures
- Process cancellations and communicate decisions to clients and advisors
- Maintain accurate, auditable cancellation records and confirmations
- Client and Advisor Support
- Act as a trusted insurance partner for clients, advisors, and insurers.
- Handle insurance-related queries professionally and promptly
- Build and maintain strong working relationships across stakeholders
- Deliver consistent, high-quality customer service in every interaction
- Workflow and Task Management
- Stay on top of a busy desk without missing a beat.
- Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence
- Create, update, monitor, and finalise tasks within workflow systems
- Maintain detailed records of all interactions and actions taken
- Meet all service level agreements and turnaround times
Team Support
- Add value beyond your own portfolio by lifting those around you.
- Mentor and support Junior Underwriters when needed
- Contribute to training and development within the team
- Assist with ad hoc projects and duties within the scope of the role
Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric (NQF Level 4)
- RE5 Qualification – essential
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in the Short-Term Insurance industry
- Solid track record in personal lines underwriting
- Strong knowledge of short-term products, policy admin, and underwriting principles
- Confident risk assessment abilities and sound decision-making
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong customer service orientation and relationship-building skills
- High attention to detail with superb accuracy
- Able to manage multiple priorities and work independently
- Strong administrative and organisational skills
- Proficiency in insurance systems and Microsoft Office applications
