5 Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Hiring Process

As Richard Branson says, “When it comes to business success it’s all about people, people, people.” We’ve listed below some mistakes that ruin your hiring. We hope this is informative and helps you ensure you hire the best each time. As we say, “every pot has its lid, it is just finding the right lid.” And if you’d like to learn more about frustrations in the current hiring landscape, check out our 2023 Trust Gap Report.

Number 1 – Hiring the first person that lands in your email box

Time is valuable and in short supply. Due to this, we often see people hiring just the first “okay” person that lands in their email box. The problem with this is that you do not have a comparison of what is out there on the market. And if the person does not turn out to be a good fit, you may regret not spending some quality time on your decision.

Number 2 – Only using one method to hire

There are three types of candidates in the world. First are the ones looking for a job – these ones are probably already in your email box. Second are the people who don’t want anyone to know that they’re looking. Lastly, there are the people who don’t know about your role or company. When using one method of hiring you only catch one type of person. Thus, it’s better to use a range of methods. From advertising your job, asking your personal network, searching on LinkedIn, or using a recruitment tool like Crystal AI that can handle big chunk of this for you.

Number 3 – Hiring the same way for all roles

Hiring an Intern and hiring an Executive requires very different methods, interviews, assessments, and skills. You should ensure, for example, that when you hire a Developer your method is very different from when you hire a Salesperson. The reason? With a Developer you are not necessarily hiring for a personality, but on the other hand, your Salesperson better have a great personality. That’s why it’s important to know your role, know who you’re looking for, and hire and interview very differently accordingly.

Number 4 – Not completing background checks

Background checks are crucial in the hiring process! No matter who you hire always run at least two to four checks, including reference or criminal checks or checks to verify qualifications. You will be amazed how much candidates do not tell you. It’s always better to know who you are hiring by learning as much as you can first. Hiring on an interview alone is dangerous, so ensure you do your checks.

Number 5 – Hiring and not listing the salary

If you like to waste your time, list your Job with no salary. You’ll end up with people who are over and under your budget and very few of those that are within it. If you are unsure of the salary, there are a number of online tools you can use to check, including our Salary Benchmarking Tool. If you cannot afford to pay the market-related salary, then list the salary you can pay and see who is able to work for that salary. Save yourself time, and the candidates time knowing what the salary is for the job.
